Milk jug covers.

Crocheted doilies & covers for milk jugs, tea cups & bowls were widely produced across Australia for many years in an effort to repel the dreaded blow fly. Simple covers for everyday use were often made of net while those for social occasions were usually decorated with attractive designs. They were edged with beads, shells & other three-dimensional forms not only for decorative purposes but also to weigh the items down so they would stay in place. Milk jug covers were used in all Australian homes well into the 20th century.

These four covers were hand made and used in Pambula and date from the early to mid-20th century.

They are from a private collection.
