Merimbula's Oysters for Winston Churchill:

In June 1945, as WWII was drawing to a close, Merimbula oyster farmer W. Chapman  supplied an order of his local bivalves for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

The Bega District News reported: “Mr. W. Chapman, oyster lessee of Merimbula, received an order the other day for oysters to be taken to England by Major Jarvie of Sydney for presentation to Mr. Churchill. The oysters were supplied last week & will go to England by air. Bill should nearly get a knighthood out of that.”

Along with many other Merimbula oyster farmers, Chapman had commenced oystering after WWI.
